The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking an Aboriginal Liaison Officer to fill an important role within the Youth Justice Unit. About the Business Unit Youth Justice, a unit of the Department of Justice and Community Safety is responsible for the statutory supervision of young people in the criminal justice system in Victoria, focussing on prevention, diversion and early intervention as the most effective and fiscally responsible ways of reducing youth crime.  Youth Justice is committed to the demonstration of the departmental values of serving the community, working together, acting with integrity, respecting other people and making it happen. Youth justice custodial centres accommodate young people aged 10-18 years who have been remanded or sentenced by the Criminal Division of the Children's Court as well as some 18-21 year olds sentenced by Adult Courts to a youth justice custodial centre.  The two Youth Justice custodial precincts in Victoria are: Parkville Youth Justice Precinct in the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Parkville, approximately five kilometres from the central business district. Cherry Creek Youth Justice Precinct (CCYJP) located to the west of Werribee. Youth Justice Custodial Services aims to engage young people in change by addressing their offending behaviour and equipping them with the skills required for positive community participation, within a safe and secure environment.  This is an Aboriginal designated position, classified under 'special measures' of section 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010. Only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible to apply. As Aboriginal Liaison Officer, you will be responsible for engaging and actively working with young Aboriginal children and young people in custody.  You will provide culturally specific support and programs to the children and young people, family and community. This role is based across both Youth Justice precincts as required. You will also take responsibility for: Working with Aboriginal children and young people, their families and communities to develop cultural plans. Providing individualised cultural and practical support for Aboriginal children and young people in custody through identifying their strengths, aspirations and obtainable goals for returning to a non-offending lifestyle in their community. Demonstrating a sound knowledge of evidence-based interventions for young Aboriginal children and young people and providing tailored assistance that may include mentoring, motivating, advocacy and skills development. A demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of the Victorian Aboriginal community.
