Now Education are working in partnership with Manchester College who require a Head of Year to work on a full time and long term basis with some of their year 12 students. Interviews are taking place asap for this exciting role - if you are interested please apply asap with an up to date CV.
As a Head of Year you will be instrumental in fostering both the educational and personal growth of young people on either a year 12 structured study programme or a level 1 vocational pathway.
The role supports students within the Foundation Learning department and extends to other vocational areas across the college where required. This position demands a strong commitment to assisting young people facing significant barriers to learning, helping them reach their full potential.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Identify, assess, and address the support needs of students to ensure they have equal access to high-quality education.
Act as a liaison between students, teachers, parents, and external agencies to ensure a holistic approach to student support.
Work closely with teachers and other colleagues to identify and address issues affecting student performance and behaviour in the classroom.
Build and maintain strong relationships with parents and carers, keeping them informed of their young person’s progress and any concerns.
Facilitate students’ access to additional services and resources as needed.
Build positive relationships with students, promoting their social, emotional, and academic development.
Create and maintain a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment.
Createa ‘safe base’ for students, providing morning and afternoon form sessions to provide ‘touch points’ to tackle issues proactively.
Drive a culture of celebrating student achievements.
Address and manage challenging behaviours effectively, employing de-escalation techniques and restorativepractices.
Provide individualised support to students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and those with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs) where required.
Demonstrate positive behaviours, attitudes, and values to serve as a role model and inspire disengaged students to make positive changes in their lives.
Help students set and achieve personal and academic goals and monitor their progress regularly.
Support students in developing social and emotional skills, resilience, and self-confidence through mentoring, coaching, and positive reinforcement.
Support students in developing positive behaviours and coping strategies.
Support students in vocational tasters and offsite work experience to enhance their practical skills and employability, where required.
Oversee and support students transitioning into further education or employment.
Plan and deliver morning and afternoon form/briefing sessions to proactively address and manage behavioural issues, ensuring a positive learning environment.
Plan and deliver a tutorial programme to support students’ personal development.
Provide tailored one-on-one and group support to students with diverse needs.Assist with instructional activities, provide individualised support to students, and ensure a positive and conducive learning environment, as required.
When required by the teacher, support students to understand the material and stay on task.
Participate in extracurricular activities, events and other duties as required.
Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students, adhering to safeguarding policies and procedures, and promoting a culture of vigilance and care.
Assess potential risks and ensure the safety and well-being of disengaged students during activities or interventions.
Maintain accurate records of student progress, behaviour, and attendance, documenting observations, interventions, and outcomes.
Monitor student attendance, follow up on absences, and work with students to improve attendance records.
Prepare reports and documentation as required for reviews and meetings concerning student progress and welfare.
Participate in ongoing training and development programs to enhance skills and knowledge.
Attend regular team meetings, supervisions, and appraisals as required.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have relevant qualifications such as:
* Youth and Community Work qualification or equivalent.
* HTLA qualification or equivalent.
* Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.
* Maths and English minimum grade C/4 at level 2.
You will also have relevant appropriate experience working in a youth related environment, including previous experience of working with emotional regulation and with positive behaviour/de-escalation strategies.
Essential Skills Include:
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Strong organisational skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
* Flexibility and adaptability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a team and support a culture of teamwork within a multidisciplinary environment.
* Proficient IT skills and a solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
* A commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion.
* Awareness of cultural diversity and proficiency in cultural competence to effectively engage with students from diverse backgrounds and communities.
* Ability to understand and relate to the experiences and challenges faced by disengaged young people.* Capacity to establish clear and appropriate boundaries while maintaining a supportive and respectful relationship with students.
* Compassionate, flexible, and proactive approach to engage and motivate students, helping them to overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential.* Aptitude to identify underlying issues or barriers to engagement and develop creative solutions to address them.
* Ability to adapt to the individual needs and preferences of disengaged students and tailor interventions or activities accordingly.
* Positive role model to support communication, with a sensitive, nurturing, and consistent approach.
