Reports ToChief Executive Officer (CEO) of the companyMunicipal client representatives (for contract performance and compliance)Regulatory agencies (for environmental and operational compliance)Position OverviewThe General Manager (GM) will provide overall leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight of an organics processing facility that handles municipal organic waste streams. This facility utilizes multiple processing technologies—such as aerobic composting, anaerobic digestion, and other resource recovery systems—to convert organic waste into valuable end products while meeting sustainability, compliance, and profitability goals.The GM is responsible for ensuring the facility operates in strict accordance with environmental, health and safety regulations, client contract requirements, and established best practices. This role involves collaboration with municipal representatives, regulators, internal corporate teams, and external stakeholders to optimize both environmental and financial performance. Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership and ManagementDevelop and execute the long-term business strategy and operational plans in alignment with corporate objectives and municipal contract obligations.Identify growth opportunities, technology enhancements, and process improvements to increase efficiency, profitability, and environmental performance.Foster a positive culture of collaboration, safety, innovation, and continuous improvement among all staff.Mentor a leadership team compromising Aerobic and Anaerobic Operations, Maintenance, Health & Safety, and support team members who are empowered to develop and deliver best practice disciplines and measure success based on Team achievement of key performance drivers and results.Operational OversightOversee operational process managers of the facility, including waste receiving, processing, odour control, and product distribution (e.g., compost, digestate, biogas, etc.).Implement and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and metrics to measure operational efficiency, product quality, and compliance.Ensure preventive maintenance programs are in place and conducted with KPI tracking for all equipment and infrastructure, minimizing downtime and maximizing equipment life cycles.Contract and Client ManagementServe as AIM’s point of contact for the municipal client, ensuring all contractual obligations (e.g., throughput, service levels, reporting) are met or exceeded.Develop and maintain strong relationships with client representatives, proactively addressing concerns, updates, and future expansion or contract renewal discussions.Prepare and present regular performance reports, including financial, operational, and environmental metrics, in accordance with client and corporate requirements.Regulatory Compliance and ReportingEnsure full compliance with applicable environmental regulations (e.g., waste management, air emissions, water quality, land use) and health & safety standards.Serve as the facility’s primary liaison with regulatory agencies, addressing permit conditions, audits, inspections, and any remedial actions.Maintain all required records, documentation, and reporting to regulatory entities and municipal stakeholders.Financial PerformanceWork closely with the Finance team to create and manage the facility’s annual budget, including cost control measures, capital expenditures, and revenue projections.Track and analyze financial performance such as; ROI on technology investments, operational efficiencies, recommend corrective actions or strategic investments as needed and cost per tonne KPI’s including labour, maintenance, rolling stock, and utilities.Collaborate with corporate accounting to ensure accurate forecasting, reporting, and adherence to fiscal policies.Stakeholder EngagementCommunicate effectively with internal corporate leadership, providing updates on operational performance, strategic initiatives, and risk management.Participate in industry forums, conferences, and technology demonstrations to remain current on emerging trends and advancements in organics processing.Leadership and Team DevelopmentRecruit, mentor, and develop staff to build a skilled, cohesive, and high-performing team.Ensure compliance with all Human Resources policies, including training and development, performance management, and succession planning.Lead Health & Safety initiatives as per corporate policy, foster a positive and inclusive Health & Safety culture with full employee accountability. Ensure HSMS is fully utilized not limited to; tracking compliance, safety, operational training, H&S reporting and updated as per company policy.Qualifications and ExperienceEducationBachelor’s degree in engineering, Environmental Science, Business Administration, or related field.Advanced degree (MBA, MS in Environmental Management, etc.) preferred but not mandatory.Professional ExperienceMinimum of 7–10 years of management experience in waste management, organics processing, recycling, waste to energy or a related environmental services industry.Proven track record of leading complex operations with multi-technology processing (e.g., composting, wastewater treatment, anaerobic digestion, RNG ).Demonstrated success managing large-scale infrastructure, ideally under contract to municipal or public agencies.Experience in stakeholder management, including governmental, regulatory, and community relations.Technical and Regulatory ExpertiseStrong understanding of waste processing technologies, process engineering principles, and environmental compliance requirements.Familiarity with relevant regulations (e.g., EPA, state/provincial agencies, local ordinances) governing organic waste processing and end-product marketing.Proficient in data analysis tools and systems for monitoring facility performance and reporting.Leadership SkillsDemonstrated ability to lead and motivate cross-functional teams in a high-paced operational environment.Ability to provide leadership support to foster autonomy, role ownership and full accountability.Excellent communication and negotiation skills for managing relationships with clients, regulators, corporate leadership, and community stakeholders.Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills with a focus on innovation and continuous improvement.Financial AcumenProven ability to develop, manage, and report on budgets of significant scale.Proven expertise using Microsoft™ tools for reporting, tracking and documentation purposes.Understanding of cost drivers in waste processing operations and strategies for revenue optimization.Experience with capital project planning, justification, and ROI analysis.Core CompetenciesStrategic Thinking: Ability to see the “big picture” and align operational strategies with broader organizational and municipal objectives.Operational Excellence: Proven approach to streamlining processes, enhancing productivity, and ensuring consistent, high-quality outputs.Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management: Keen awareness of evolving environmental, health & safety, and other applicable regulations; ability to mitigate risks effectively.People Leadership and Team Building: Strong focus on coaching, mentoring, and developing staff to foster engagement and productivity.Stakeholder Engagement: Skilled at building trust and rapport with diverse stakeholders, from municipal partners and regulators to local communities and customers.Financial Management: Demonstrated competency in cost containment, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.Performance MetricsOperational Efficiency: Meeting or exceeding throughput targets, equipment uptime, and productivity benchmarks.Regulatory Compliance: Number and severity of violations, audit findings, or compliance gaps.Client Satisfaction: Client feedback, contract renewals, and additional service agreements.Safety Performance: Incident rate, lost-time injuries, and overall safety culture.Financial Performance: Budget adherence, cost per ton, ROI on capital investments, revenue growth.
